Overview#
Fusion ties three things to your Autodesk identity: who you are (sign-in), what you may do (license entitlement), and where your data lives (cloud hub and sync). When one of these breaks, the symptoms overlap. A grayed-out command might be a licensing issue, a sign-in with the wrong account, or a stale session. A design that "will not save" might be a network problem, a permission problem, or a service outage. This page separates the three layers so you can find the cause quickly.
Note: Items below marked "not confirmed" are not in Autodesk's help. For anything involving billing, ownership transfer, or license compliance, follow Autodesk's current official instructions or contact Autodesk support.
Where to find it#
- Sign-in status in Fusion: My Profile at the top right of the Application bar (it opens Preferences, per Autodesk help; Sign Out is expected there too but is not described in the help mirror).
- Autodesk Account (web): account.autodesk.com. The Products and services area lists your entitlements, terms, and assigned users.
- Autodesk Fusion service status: Autodesk's status site.
- Data Panel: shows hubs, projects, upload status, and sync indicators.
- Job Status: the Job Status icon opens a flyout showing job status, Fusion update status, and online/offline status.
- About dialog: includes a Refresh button (added in the October 5, 2026 build) that immediately updates Fusion and extension licenses.
- Service Utility: Help > Support and Diagnostics > Service Utility. It opens automatically if Fusion fails to launch twice in a row; Reset clears sign-in credentials and the local cache.
Sign-in problems#
Common causes#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in window never appears | Browser or pop-up blocked; default browser misconfigured | Set a standard browser as default; allow pop-ups; try another browser |
| Sign-in loop (returns to the login screen) | Corrupt cache or cookies; proxy interference | Reset with the Service Utility (see crash page); clear browser cookies for Autodesk; disable VPN temporarily |
| "Invalid credentials" | Wrong account or forgotten password | Reset the password via the Autodesk Account web page |
| Multiple accounts confusion | School email vs personal email vs company email | Sign out; sign in with the account that holds the license |
| Two-step verification codes fail | Clock drift on the authenticator device | Sync the phone's time; use backup codes |
| SSO (single sign-on) company login fails | Domain not recognized | Use the company's SSO flow; contact your admin |
| Works in browser but not in Fusion | Firewall blocks Fusion | Allow Fusion and Autodesk services through the firewall |
| Sign-in works then signs out repeatedly | Time and date incorrect | Enable automatic time on the operating system |
Step by step: a clean re-authentication#
- Save any local work (or export an archive) if you can.
- In Fusion, choose Sign Out from the profile menu, then quit completely.
- Open a browser and visit the Autodesk Account page; sign out and sign in again to confirm your credentials.
- Restart Fusion and sign in.
- If a loop persists, use Service Utility > Reset (it clears sign-in credentials and local cache; Autodesk lists stuck sign-in among the problems it fixes), restart, and try again.
- If you use a VPN, proxy, or corporate firewall, test from another network, such as a phone hotspot, to determine whether the network is the cause.
Tip: Keep a note of which email address holds your license. A large share of "missing features" tickets are just signing into the wrong account.
Licensing problems#
Typical symptoms#
- Commands you expect are missing or grayed out (for example Simulation, advanced Manufacture, Generative Design, Animation, or extension features).
- A banner says your license is expiring or expired.
- A dialog says you have reached a limit on editable documents (a personal use constraint).
- Fusion switches to a trial or "no license" mode.
- Features appear in one workspace but not in another.
Diagnosis order#
- Confirm the account. Check which account is signed in. Compare with the account that holds your entitlement.
- Check the entitlement in the Autodesk Account. Verify product, plan, start and end dates, and assignments. For team licenses, a hub administrator assigns licenses to members who have accepted their invitation (Status: Active in Admin > Members of the web client).
- Check the license type. Personal, startup, education, and commercial paths differ in capabilities. See the Licenses and plans page in Getting Started and the Personal use vs paid page in this section.
- Check extensions. Extensions are advanced capabilities with separate access, except where your offering includes them (Fusion for Manufacturing includes the Manufacturing Extension; Fusion for Design includes the Design and Simulation Extensions and Fusion Manage). Autodesk says options differ by Fusion access type.
- Refresh the session. Click Refresh in the About dialog to update Fusion and extension licenses immediately, or sign out and in again. The delay after a purchase is not documented.
- Check the system clock. Entitlement checks rely on valid time.
- Check offline limits. Offline mode is available for two weeks at a time; then you must reconnect and log in to validate the license.
Expiring and expired access#
Watch for in-app banners and emails. How long personal, startup or education access lasts and how renewal works is not described in the help mirror (not confirmed in Autodesk's documentation); check your Autodesk Account. A plan is purchased as 1 Month, 1 Year or 3 Years in the Purchase Manager, and a person without a subscription who joins a hub starts a free 30-day trial, once.
The editable-document limit (personal use)#
The release notes refer to personal users reaching "the limit of 10 editable documents". The mechanics (what makes a document active, how to free a slot, whether share links count) are not described in the help mirror; check the capacity flyout in your build. Earlier drafts' statements about the Data Panel state change and share links counting are not confirmed in Autodesk's documentation.
Commercial use warnings#
Using a personal or education license for paid work is against Autodesk's terms (see the Personal use vs paid page and Autodesk's terms of use). If your situation changes, move to the appropriate plan.
Sync and cloud problems#
Fusion stores design data in the cloud and keeps a local cache. Problems fall into upload, download, permission, and conflict categories.
Upload and save failures#
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Save spinner never ends | Poor network or very large file | Wait; check Job Status; try on a stable network; split the design |
| "Failed to save" dialog | Connectivity loss, permissions, or service issue | Save As to a new name; check the project permission; check status page |
| Save succeeded but changes missing | Opened an older version or another tab | Check Version History and the open document's tab |
| Upload stuck in Job Status | Network, firewall, or proxy | Retry; restart Fusion; try a different network |
| Cannot save to a team project | Viewer-only permission | Ask the project admin for edit access |
| Cannot create a document | Document limit or project full | Check limits and storage |
Conflicts and "someone else edited this"#
When two people save the same design, general behavior is that saves create sequential versions rather than merging automatically (the details are not spelled out in the help mirror). Design Reservation, available to teams with more than one member (not personal use), shows who is editing through avatars and reservation badges. If you see an "update available" or out-of-date warning:
- Do not just save over it.
- Use Save As to preserve your local changes.
- Open the latest cloud version, compare, and transfer your changes manually (for example by copying features), or use Version History to decide which version to promote.
See the cloud collaboration and versioning pages in Getting Started for the policies on locks and milestones.
Out-of-date references#
External references (components linked from other designs) show an update indicator when the source changes. If references do not update:
- Check that the referencing design and the source live in a project you can access.
- Update via the Data Panel or the browser's reference context menu.
- If the source moved or was renamed, re-establish the reference (see the External references page in section 05).
Downloading, offline, and missing data#
- A design shows a cloud icon only: the data is not cached; connect and open once.
- Offline mode: click the Job Status icon and toggle Working Online to Working Offline (the toggle turns red); toggle back to go online (green). Offline mode lasts two weeks at a time. Cache designs, folders or projects first (Autodesk help: Cache designs, folders, and projects) so they are available offline.
- A design appears in the web but not in Fusion: refresh the Data Panel; sign out and in; clear the cache if needed.
- Recently deleted: recovery of deleted designs is not documented in the help set consulted; ask your hub administrator.
Permissions#
Project role names and capabilities are covered in the hubs and projects pages of Getting Started and are not restated here (the earlier table of Project Admin, Editor and Viewer was not verified). Hub administrators invite people and assign licenses in the Fusion web client (profile image > Admin > Members); administrators do not need a Fusion license for this. The web client is not included with personal use or trial.
Network checklist#
The Service Utility includes Network Diagnostics, which performs a network check on key domains required for Fusion and Autodesk services. If you work behind a corporate firewall, run it and give IT the result. Other tips:
- Avoid captive-portal Wi-Fi networks (hotels, airports), which block silent background connections until you accept terms in a browser.
- Disable VPN split issues by testing without VPN.
- Large uploads work better on wired connections.
- Time and certificates must be correct; a wrong system date causes TLS failures.
Options reference#
| Option | What it does | Notes/default |
|---|---|---|
| Sign Out | Ends the session so a fresh sign-in reads entitlements | Profile menu |
| Job Status | Job status, Fusion update status, online/offline toggle | Icon in the interface |
| Version History | Lists saved versions with restore options | Data Panel |
| Offline mode | Allows local work without a connection | Two weeks at a time |
| Update references | Pulls changes from source designs | Browser or Data Panel |
| Autodesk Account | Shows entitlements and renewal | Web |
| License assignment | Hub admin assigns licenses to Active members | Web client > Admin > Members |
| Status page | Shows service incidents | Check first |
Tips and pitfalls#
Tip: When troubleshooting, test the web version (the Fusion web viewer or the Autodesk Account page) to determine whether the problem is in the application or the account.
Warning: Do not share one login among several people. Fusion licenses are per user, and concurrent logins can cause sign-outs and sync conflicts.
Warning: Service Utility Reset clears the local cache and sign-in credentials; confirm everything has uploaded first.
Tip: Export an archive (.f3z) or STEP copy of key designs before a renewal, license change, or account migration. It insulates you from surprises.
Warning: Education and personal licenses cannot be used for client work. If a client asks you to work from your personal account, discuss licensing first.
Practice exercise#
- Sign into the Autodesk Account in a browser and record your product, entitlement type, and end date.
- In Fusion, confirm the signed-in account matches.
- Open the Job Status flyout and a design's Version History in the Data Panel; note what each shows.
- Create a short checklist of your own: five items to check, in order, when a feature is missing.
Expected result: you can tell, in under two minutes, whether a problem is sign-in, licensing, or sync.
