Sketching#
Every parametric model starts with a sketch, and this section covers 2D sketching in Fusion from first line to robust profile. It explains planes and the sketch workflow, the drawing tools (lines, arcs, shapes, splines, text and imported artwork), editing tools, and the Sketch Palette.
Most of the section is about control: geometric constraints, dimensions, projecting existing geometry, and getting a sketch fully constrained. It closes with best practices and a troubleshooting page for open profiles and over-constrained sketches. It suits beginners, with later pages aimed at intermediate and advanced users.
Pages in this section#
- Sketch Basics: Planes, Environment, and Workflow (beginner): How to start, edit, and finish a 2D sketch in Fusion.
- The Sketch Palette (beginner): Every toggle in the Sketch Palette: linetype, look at.
- Lines, Arcs, and Points (beginner): How to draw lines, the three arc types.
- Rectangles, Circles, Polygons, Ellipses, and Slots (beginner): Every closed-shape sketch tool in Fusion: rectangle, circle.
- Splines: Fit Point, Control Point, and Conic Curves (intermediate): How fit-point and control-point splines work in Fusion.
- Modify Tools: Fillet, Trim, Extend, Break, Offset, Move, Scale, Mirror, and Patterns (intermediate): Edit existing sketch geometry: fillet, trim, extend, break.
- Geometric Constraints (intermediate): All twelve Fusion sketch constraints explained: what each does.
- Sketch Dimensions (intermediate): Use the Sketch Dimension tool for linear, aligned.
- Project, Intersect, and Include 3D Geometry (intermediate): Bring existing model geometry into a sketch with Project.
- Sketch Text and Imported Artwork (Canvas, SVG, DXF) (intermediate): Add text to sketches, put it on a path.
- Fully Constrained Sketches (intermediate): What fully defined means, how to count what is missing.
- Sketch Best Practices (and Why Fusion Has No Sketch Blocks) (advanced): Habits that keep sketches robust: plane choice, skeleton sketches.
- Troubleshooting Sketches (intermediate): Diagnose and fix open profiles, over-constrained sketches, flipping geometry.
Confirmed vs not confirmed#
Several pages flag items as not confirmed in Autodesk's documentation: single-key tool shortcuts (only S and D are documented), a Constraint Settings list in the Sketch Palette, some dimension types and dimension-name behavior, polygon and slot details, and whether a block tool exists. Check these in your own build.
