Drawings and Documentation#
This section covers creating manufacturing drawings from Fusion designs. It explains the Drawing workspace and how drawings stay linked to the 3D model, then base, projected, section, detail, auxiliary and break views, dimensions and tolerances, GD&T symbols, and text, leaders and notes.
It also covers parts lists, balloons and hole tables, multi-sheet and exploded drawings, ISO and ASME templates, and export to PDF, DWG, DXF and CSV. It is for beginners making a first drawing, with intermediate and advanced pages on tolerancing and GD&T.
Pages in this section#
- Drawing Workspace Overview (beginner): How to create a 2D drawing from a design, how the Drawing workspace is laid out, and how drawings stay linked to your 3D model.
- Templates and Standards (ISO and ASME) (intermediate): Choose ISO or ASME, understand projection angle and sheet sizes, and build reusable drawing templates with title blocks and borders.
- Base and Projected Views (beginner): Place base views, add projected and isometric views, set scale and style, and manage view alignment and properties.
- Section, Detail, Auxiliary, and Break Views (intermediate): Create section views with cutting lines, magnified detail views, auxiliary views for inclined faces, and break views for long parts.
- Dimensions and Tolerances (intermediate): Add linear, radial, angular, baseline, ordinate and chain dimensions; apply limits, fits, and tolerance formats; and dimension according to good practice.
- GD&T and Drawing Symbols (advanced): Use feature control frames, datum identifiers, datum targets, surface texture, and welding symbols, with a primer on the GD&T characteristics.
- Annotations, Text, and Notes (beginner): Add text, leaders, hole and thread notes, centerlines, center marks, and sheet-level sketches to complete a drawing.
- Tables, Parts Lists, Balloons, and Hole Tables (intermediate): Create a parts list (BOM) table, balloon components, renumber, build hole tables, edit columns, and export tables to CSV.
- Sheets and Exploded Drawings (intermediate): Manage multi-sheet drawings and build exploded assembly views by drawing from a saved animation.
- Exporting to PDF, DWG, and DXF (intermediate): Export drawing sheets to PDF, DWG, and DXF, understand what is lost in CAD exports, and export tables as CSV.
Before you start#
Third-angle versus first-angle projection is a common cause of misread prints; match the symbols and projection to the standard chosen in your template.
Confirmed vs not confirmed#
Not confirmed in Autodesk's documentation: license limits on Drawing export formats, which license tier includes configurations for drawings, how to break a projected view's alignment, whether trail lines carry into exploded drawing views, and how hole tables and the Quantity column decide what counts.
